August Birchbox Review

warning: this will be a long one

I am a bad lady and never posted a July Birchbox review… BUT THERE’S A REASON. I felt that all I talked about was Birchbox this and Birchbox that, which is all well and fine, but this blog is about more than beauty products. We here be crafters πŸ˜‰

Saying that, here I am doing a box review for August! Now, actually getting my box this month was quite a drama. Some scummy-scumbag STOLE my box! You may be aware that we live in a building full of flats and the mail gets delivered to the foyer and then distributed into individual mailboxes. Every month my Birchbox is left right at my door, under the mat, as it won’t fit in the postbox and this is all well and good. However, this month some lazy Yodel (yes, I’m naming and shaming cause I was so upset) delivery driver decided not to take the ever-so convenient lift ride up to my floor to deliver my parcel properly, instead he left it in a completely unsecured communal hallway. If I didn’t hate Yodel before, I do now.

So when I went to leave one morning I spotted the bright chevron packaging sitting on the floor of the foyer, empty, save for the magazine. Some little idiot had OPENED MY MAIL and STOLE THE BOX OF GOODIES and then had the audacity to leave the magazine. I assume they must be illiterate.

You can maybe imagine how upset I was to see this as I genuinely look forward to my Birchbox every month. For someone to commit 2 crimes and steal it from me without even disposing of the packaging was so hurtful.

With a heavy heart I emailed Birchbox customer service to see if there was anything they could do. I wasn’t very hopeful as it truly wasn’t their fault that there are horrible people in this world. My mood perked right up when I was emailed back with a lovely reply from Joyce who dispatched a new box right out to me and raised the issue with the delivery company. I was blown away by the fantastic customer service and want to publically thank and recommend Birchbox for their kindness and for restoring my faith in humanity.

Whew, that was a bit of a long-winded rant… ONTO THE REVIEW!

This month, Birchbox teamed up with InStyle magazine to provide subscribers with a very well-rounded box in my opinion. The range of products and brands is varied, and although it’s not my favourite box, it is pretty darn good nonetheless. Usually I just go through the box and tell you what’s what, but this month I’ve had the time to try everything out so here is my honest review of each product:

Molton Brown Ylang Ylang Body Wash

Love a luxury sample. Molton Brown always reminds me of my Mammy as for a few years in a row Molton Brown products were pretty high on her christmas wish list! This scent is pretty strong for everyday use but it would be a fabulous luxury to use on a pamper night!

Bluemandarines SkinLife Energetic Cellular Cream

My skin is perking up and it will only get better in the less sweaty months to come to I took a brave step and used this instead of my usual (non-essential) night cream. I didn’t hate it. I didn’t love it either. It’s pretty blah for me but it had a nice texture. Not so nice price tag though…

Gerda Spillmann Hydro Pearls Make-Up Primer

This is the 2nd Gerda Spillmann product that I’ve received from Birchbox and I love how luxurious they are. Unfortunately I think I have to come to terms with the fact that the formula isn’t great for my oily skin. This primer worked well enough although it was a bit of an odd sensation putting it on. This would be perfect fro someone who has dryer skin and is looking for a radiance boost.

Montibel.lo Gold Oil Essence – Amber and Argan Hair Oil

I always shy away from using hair oils as I find that they usually just make my hair greasy. Thankfully I really do see the benefits of this particular product, sans the greasy mop! I think my hair seems shiner and is easier to style when I’ve used it. Good one!

LOVE THIS. I like it when Birchbox give you something a bit different and food is always a winner πŸ™‚ This is the first time I’ve tried Propercorn, although I have tried similar products and loved them too. I really like how it feels like you eating LOADS yet the calorie count is so low haha!

LAQA & Co. Fat Lip Pencil

This would have been my favourite product if the colour was different. I am really enjoying wearing fuller lip colours at the moment and this really appeals to me as it’s not glossy and is easy to apply. The formula was lovely but the colour really did let it down. it looks like I’ve just smeared foundation over my lips. No bueno.

Birchbox Cooling Eye Mask

The Birchbox extra is fantastic this month! It also couldn’t have come at a better time as my old cooling eye mask burst not a month ago! I love using this after going in the shower, before putting make up on in the morning. It really reduces the puffiness and definitely makes you look more awake!

If you’ve managed to make it to the end of this post – well done you! You are my favourite person today so give yourself a high-five from me πŸ™‚

Did you like this month’s Birchbox? Or has this review tempted you to try them out?
